Allan & David: Beaches & Markets

Below are a few pictures from our days at Bondi Beach and Manly Beach, as well as a few of the Markets we went to.

BEACHES
We went to Bondi Beach (by train and then bus) on a cloudy, cool day and did a several mile walk down the coastline, which included a graveyard that looked over the sea. (Some developer probably stays up nights, wondering how to move that cemetery to another location, and build condos!) The photos we have below are of some fascinating sandstone formations that we saw along our walk, plus some statuary from the cemetery.
We went to Manly Beach (which is on the north shore, so we took a ferry) in the late afternoon and walked the beach. It was a lovely day. Later we had dinner at a Mexican restaurant, Bench (great veggie fajitas!), and took the evening ferry back to Sydney, as illustrated in the photos. Manly beach had several filtered water stations throughout the area, encouraging you to fill up your own bottle rather than buy water, which prevents plastic bottle waste. (Funded by Culligan Water and Manly--good job Culligan!) Why can't more cities do this??? You rock, Manly!!

MARKETS
Paddy's Market is downtown, near Chinatown. It's ginormous, and we saw only about 1/16th of it. It's all indoors, and it's row after row after row of clothes, hats, wigs (lots of wigs...David was tempted to buy some hair), food, shoes, trinkets...you name it. We mostly focused on the produce section.
Paddington Market is very similar to Portland's Saturday Market under the Burnside Bridge. Lots of local artists selling their wares, and Allan had a quadrifoil pendant made by one of the artists that specialized in 'architecturally inspired jewelry'. It's really nice, and he picked it up a week later.

Glebe Market (and the Glebe area of town) looked like it came from the Hawthorne or Alberta districts of Portland. Very funky/alternative, with an all-organic restaurant, hippie/new age stores, and lots of recycled clothing. David felt right at home.

  1. Great sandstone formations! Did you know of the formations before reaching the beach or was this a wonderful surprise?

Great view of the skyline from Manly Beach. Must have been a great trip back to catch the scenes at night.
